This task should be much shorter than the last one. Use what you learned while creating your ecosystem to complete Eco Uh-Oh!
Pollution and Your Ecosystem
You've created an ecosystem, with wonderfully delicate and interdependent (meaning everything depends on everything else) chain of organisms, along with the equally important abiotic factors. Now someone wants to build a factory near your ecosystem, and that means pollution. Humans can have a huge impact on ecosystems. Watch the video below, and don't be afraid to go back and review something in it if the narrator speaks too fast for you. There is an interactive table of contents at the end of the video.
Now that you've watched the video, click the link below to go to an interactive website that simulates the effects of acid rain on a lake. What do you think would happen if acid rain fell on your ecosystem? Remember the Food Fight game you played when you created your ecosystem? This could be helpful here, too.
You're ready to begin creating your flyer or writing your letter! Here are some questions for you and your partner to ask yourselves while you write:
- How will the pollution from the factory affect the air, water, and land in our ecosystem?
- What will happen to the plants that live in our ecosystem when the air, water, and land become polluted?
- What will happen to the animals?
- What will happen to us (humans) because of the pollution in our ecosystem?
Extra!
Want to suggest an alternate source of power for the factory that will cause less pollution? Go right ahead! Here's a website that gives a little information about Renewable Energy, or energy nature can replace.
